Student Graduation 2010 – What a night!
“It’s always hard to say goodbye to students that you have nourished, nurtured, pushed, scolded when wrong and watched grow… I feel like a mother all over again!”
Eva Csernyanszky, School Director.

This is indeed the most difficult part of the year for all of us here at Friends of Design, but also the most exciting, as we wish all of our students all the best, knowing that we have done our very best to give them the skills to go out there into the design world with their very best design(er) wings spread and ready to soar.
In honor of all their hard work, we decided to throw the biggest graduation party we have had to date at our new premises on Bree Street. After weeks of calling sponsors and speakers, building stands and benches (yes, building!), compiling marks and putting up student work, we were all ready to relax with a drink or two! And with our drinks sponsors this was more than possible with their kind donations – Jordan Wines, Peroni’s and Blakes & Doyle’s from SAB Miller and Red Bull.

The night kicked off with a welcome from our School Director, Eva Csernyanszky to all graduates and their guests as well as various corporates in the industry, with the entire guest list nearly 200 strong.
We then opened the floor to our fantastic speakers and first up was Eran Eyal from well known T-Shirt Design platform, Springleap. Eran opened his presentation with an interesting, thought provoking discussion around how, since the dawn of time, humans have been driven to forming “tribes” , how relevant this basic instinct still is, and the way that Springleap has integrated this into their company philosophy. Designers all over are invited to form “tribes” on Springleap’s platform to share and spread their ideas, forming a design community where opportunities for those who otherwise would not be able to showcase their talent are given the chance to do so.
Eran also gave our graduates some valuable advice about working in the design world, urging them to be as different as possible, and stay true and unique to their talents. Needless to say, we all had plenty to chew over when Eran ended off.

Next up was the one and only Richard Mulholland. Richard started one of the biggest and best presentation companies in the country Missing Link, who have grown in leaps and bounds over the years with their unique way of approaching presentations. With his fresh way of thinking, he managed to charm, inspire, entertain and invite new perspectives to all of us, whilst keeping the crowd interested and opening up new ways of thinking He kept a smile on the face of each and every guest (even the grandparents) and handled technical problems with ease. Three days after the event, we are still receiving calls from guests who attended and were simply blown away.
Once the presentations were done, certificates were handed out, raising cheers and applause from the crowd. Whilst all of our students did very well this year, we have singled a few out for extra recognition:
1 Year Web Design & Interactive Media:
Top Student – Angelique Dos Santos
Most Improved Student – Jamey Cupido
Best Portfolio – Gareth van Rooyen
1 Year Print Design & Publishing:
Top Student – Sanne Van Hooff
Most Improved Student – Gwynne Bland
Best Portfolio – Nikki Van Rooyen

Congratulations once again to all our students, you have worked so hard and we are proud of every single one of you! And a special thanks to Learning Curve for their kind donations of two fabulous Wacom tablets for the top students – lucky them!
When all was said and done, we turned up the music, grabbed drinks and lovely snacks and proceeded to mingle and look at all the wonderful work on display. Students were eager to get the night going and in a short space of time, the dancefloor started cooking and much fun was had by all. We ended off, exhausted, hot and happy around 2am, bidding our students farewell with more than one tear in the eye.

“I am an Entrepreneur” Competition
Springleap.com, well known T – Shirt competition platform, is proud to annouce its “I am an Entrepreneur” Design Competition” in partnership with Raizcorp…
What is this thing? This elusive concept: Entrepreneurship?
It seems to mean many things to different people… but as a designer: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
This is your chance to express that feeling and outlook.
Raizcorp is a South African based business startup incubator with an ardent tried and tested commitment to support the growth and development of entrepreneurship
Allon Raiz [ founder and CEO of Raizcorp ] recently authored and published an inspirational book for entrepreneurs based on years of working as an entrepreneur and helping them grow into powerful businesses, entitled “Lose the Business Plan”
Here’s a cool video from Raizcorp to help inspire you!
We caught up with Eran Eyal [ co-founder of Springleap.com and evly.com ], who had this to say on entrepreneurship :
The delving into the depth of entrepreneurship is not at all unlike that of the artistic creative process. It is difficult to assess success in the trenches, troughs and spikes – it is only the passage of time that allows us to observe the passage in perspective… to see whence the steel of skill and the sea of creative talent meet.
As a designer, you are to express your understanding of this phenomenon called entrepreneurship.
Some inspiring words there… hmmm…
NOW FOR THE EXCITING STUFF!!!

Entrepreneurship is not just about business. It’s about the birthing of an idea, the tension between fear and hope, and the ability to live in the space between what could be and what is. – Allon Raiz
As a designer, you are to express your understanding of this phenomenon called entrepreneurship.
