‘Greymatter’ – Photography Exhibition by Nicette dos Santos
With the rise of instant photography apps and its ‘quick-fix’ filter and effect counterpart, it’s often difficult to decipher the authenticity of an image. Instead of capturing the subject as it exists in its most ethereal form, we automatically re-colour, re-shape, and re-size – stripping the subject of its very essence. So much so, these filters and effects are often considered before the subject, as if it were a prerequisite to its final form.
Through the seemingly limited lens of an iPhone 5, Nicette’s unique body of work, entitled ‘Greymatter’, explores the art of ‘iphonography’ devoid of any superficial effects, filters or apps. Taking this concept further, Nicette has chosen to capture subjects that weigh between a greyscale of black and white, revealing to the naked eye the ethereal experience of subject and colour in its most natural and simplest form.
