Friends of Design Academy of the Digital Arts is now taking late applications.

Missed the deadline to apply for your creative course of choice? There may still be hope – but only if you act now!

The official application period for Friends of Design’s acclaimed digital arts courses has closed, but the academy recently announced its intention to allow late applications for the 2019 academic year. This comes alongside many similar announcements from other accredited higher education facilities in South Africa, after unexpectedly high numbers of late applications were received in 2018.

“It’s not uncommon for students to struggle to complete the application process for their colleges of choice while also balancing the pressures of writing matric, and/or working a job,” says Kay Tolle, Founder and Director of Friends of Design. “In the case of creative college applications that require a portfolio, like we do for some of our courses at Friends of Design, it can be even more difficult to find the necessary time and focus – particularly for applicants from underprivileged backgrounds.”

In an effort to support their commitment to inclusive and accessible education, Friends of Design has decided to make limited provision for late applications between 15 December 2018 and 29 January 2019.

“We do give preference to applications from students who showed the commitment, passion and time-management skills to submit on time,” Tolle notes, “but we also understand that life doesn’t always go according to plan. We’re hoping that, by giving prospective students the next couple of weeks to put together and perfect their applications, we’ll be able to accommodate creatives whose talents may otherwise have gone to waste.”

If that sounds like you, you may want to get moving as fast as possible, however. Spaces are very limited in Friends of Design’s small, focussed, and hands-on creative classes.

“Applicants definitely need not wait until their matric results are released to apply,” says Tolle. “If anything, waiting will only decrease your chances. Rather apply as soon as possible with your mid-year marks, and make sure to put your best foot forward when completing your application and portfolio requirements.”
